In 1993, Essential Driver Training and its motorcycle division Fast Trak was opened in a tiny two room craft centre in the north of Shrewsbury. Almost thirty years later we are still going from strength to strength.<\/p>\n

Our core business in earnings capability is trucks and haulage but our hearts are in bikes. Every single member of our staff is an enthusiastic biker and most are qualified instructors.<\/p>\n

But many of them also drive lorries and of course we all drive cars too.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>

We train on bikes, we tour on bikes and we race bikes. We have staff who slide around speedway tracks. If you do something on a bike that we don’t, it’s probably illegal and you should be sent to prison.<\/p>\n

If you want to learn to ride, well, here we are. Without doubt the longest serving bike trainers in the county.<\/p>\n

The first in the UK to have powers delegated by the DVSA to certify advanced bike instructors and, as far as we know the only people who can teach you to ride, teach you to instruct, take you round Oulton Park, the Nurburgring and the Grand Canyon and to Top Gun in Nevada.<\/p>\n

A short time ago we managed to secure additional training areas whilst also extending our truck and car contracts. We are still on target to open our motorcycle touring centre in Spain, aiming for autumn 2023 for our first tours from our own centre.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>

At the advent of the Driver CPC in 2008 we moved heavily into the PCV and LGV area and grew into what would become our largest division, that is everything transport and logistics.<\/p>\n

Our commercial department offers courses for the Operator CPC, often known as the Transport Manager qualification, Driver CPC, driver training, in house assessor courses, a tachograph bureau, and much much more. David started the company in 1993 having retired as a Police Inspector with 26 years service. His police time was equally divided between criminal investigation, traffic and general patrol. He was a Grade One Police driver trained at one of the six Home Office Schools, rode police bikes, worked motorways, was a vehicle examiner and gave expert evidence which was accepted at Magistrates, Coroners and the High Courts.<\/p>\n

He received thirteen commendations with one in particular awarded by the Courts and his Chief Constable for his driving skills in a lifesaving incident when he took an unconscious non-breathing casualty to hospital covering 9 miles in 5 minutes in heavy rain. He was high speed escort to the SAS and also once escorted an ambulance over 80 miles in one trip.<\/p>\n

Since his retirement, he became one of the highest qualified driving and motorcycle instructors in the Country and became the first ever motorcycle instructor to have powers delegated from the DSA to be able to award current instructors with an advanced teaching qualification.<\/p>\n

With goods vehicles and buses, he has held a licence for artics and double deckers for over 40 years and has been an instructor on both groups for over 25 years. As our Director of Training he is responsible for preparing and writing all training courses including motorcycle instructor and Driver and Operator CPC courses.<\/p>\n

He has made presentations at Government level, and prepared the motorcycle training and testing programme for the Republic of Ireland making that presentation to the Minister of Transport in person. On the bike front he helps organise many of the overseas tours and was instrumental in arranging the 2015 tour of the Top Gun base in Nevada, in the United States.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>

To be perfectly honest, our company would have folded long ago without Serena as she keeps everything afloat and everyone in check. She arranges the training, deals with the finances and rules us all with a rod of iron but a heart of gold. And the only member of staff to have a personal P.A.<\/p>\n

She has been with the Company for about 18 years and was made a Director several years ago.<\/p>\n

She will take over completely when David calls it a day, and that is why he never drinks tea or coffee she has made and why he keeps all medicines out of her reach just in case she wants to bring the take over date a little closer.<\/p>\n

She is a very keen motorcyclist and a former instructor, giving up only to take over the management.<\/p>\n

She currently rides a Triumph Street Triple Limited Edition which replaced her Kawasaki Z1000. It was on the Kawasaki that she famously tried to cheat at the N\u00fcrburgring by taking a short cut through a field only to be foiled by the armco which she bounced off with incredible panache.<\/p>\n

Serena was in charge of one of our earlier trips to the USA, taking the guide’s role in a car and managing to split the group of fifteen into three groups who rode off in three different directions.<\/p>\n

Maintaining her normal state of calm on her return she quietly mentioned to me that if she was ever asked in future to take charge of a bike tour, “you can stick the F….ing bike and shove it up your F…ing Ar..” Sometimes her command of the English Language leaves a little to be desired.<\/p>\n

He has made presentations at Government level, and prepared the motorcycle training and testing programme for the Republic of Ireland making that presentation to the Minister of Transport in person.<\/p>\n

On the bike front he helps organise many of the overseas tours and was instrumental in arranging the 2015 tour of the Top Gun base in Nevada, in the United States.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>

To be perfectly honest, our company would have folded long ago without Serena as she keeps everything afloat and everyone in check. She arranges the training, deals with the finances and rules us all with a rod of iron but a heart of gold. And the only member of staff to have a personal P.A.<\/p>\n

She has been with the Company for about 18 years and was made a Director several years ago.<\/p>\n

She will take over completely when David calls it a day, and that is why he never drinks tea or coffee she has made and why he keeps all medicines out of her reach just in case she wants to bring the take over date a little closer.<\/p>\n

She is a very keen motorcyclist and a former instructor, giving up only to take over the management.<\/p>\n

She currently rides a Triumph Street Triple Limited Edition which replaced her Kawasaki Z1000. It was on the Kawasaki that she famously tried to cheat at the N\u00fcrburgring by taking a short cut through a field only to be foiled by the armco which she bounced off with incredible panache.<\/p>\n

Serena was in charge of one of our earlier trips to the USA, taking the guide’s role in a car and managing to split the group of fifteen into three groups who rode off in three different directions.<\/p>\n

Maintaining her normal state of calm on her return she quietly mentioned to me that if she was ever asked in future to take charge of a bike tour, “you can stick the F….ing bike and shove it up your F…ing Ar..” Sometimes her command of the English Language leaves a little to be desired. She does agree though if you want anything done at our place, it’s no good asking any of the men. And to be honest, we agree. We have to.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>

Top Gun Tour<\/h3>

Unless you have Tom Cruise in your phone book you probably have not had the option of visiting Top Gun, or as they say in the USA the \"Best of the Best\" US Naval Aviators Weapons Development Training School. Our first visit was in May 2016 when just two of us had the opportunity to see the elite unit in action. Not ones to miss a trick like this when we had the chance to go again in September 2018, we jumped at the chance, this time taking six other friends. An invite rarely afforded to anyone outside of Nevada let alone outside of the USA...<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/a><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>

The N\u00fcrburgring Tour<\/h3>

Silverstone: The home of motor racing. Or is it? Just over 3.6 miles long and almost perfectly flat. Sterile and smooth with a couple of bendy bits. Now compare Silverstone to the Nurburgring. Two straight sections each of 2.5 miles in length, a 43 degree banked corner, a 1000 feet difference in height from it's hills to its valley. 150 bends and 72 corners. Not forgetting the three jumps. Almost 15 miles of total fear. More scary than a gang of scary things wearing clown masks and carrying hand grenades with the pin out.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/a><\/div><\/div><\/div>

If you want castles and mountains and rivers and roads in abundance, this is the trip for you. Stelvio Pass was once voted the world's best riding road, and it can be found just a half hour ride from the hotel we use as our base.
